This project was originally conceived by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, but responsibility shifted to MMRDA once it became clear the alignment overlapped directly with Metro Line 6. The Double Decker Design Explained
The most distinctive part of this project is a 2.58 kilometre stretch built as a genuine double decker structure, vehicular traffic runs on the lower deck while Metro Line 6 Mumbai trains operate directly above it on the upper level. This particular segment is being executed by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on a deposit basis, carrying a project cost of around ₹304 crore.
The Cable-Stayed Bridge Coming Next
Beyond the double decker section lies a second stretch, a 1.557 kilometre single level flyover that includes a striking 120 metre cable-stayed bridge crossing both the Western Express Highway and the already operational Metro Line 7. This particular segment is expected to become one of the more visually distinctive additions to Mumbai's suburban skyline once finished.
A Recent Engineering Milestone
Earlier this year, MMRDA successfully launched a massive 558 metric tonne, 52 metre special span at the busy Infinity Mall junction, a genuine engineering achievement given how tightly this work has had to be sequenced around live traffic and an operational metro line running alongside it.
Why This Project Has Taken So Long
Progress here hasn't been quick, and for fairly understandable reasons. Restricted working hours due to heavy daily traffic on JVLR, careful coordination with Metro Line 7's operational teams, encroachment clearance at Veera Desai Junction and Pratap Nagar, and the relocation of previously undocumented underground utilities have all added friction along the way.
What Commuters Are Currently Dealing With
The scale of the problem this project is solving becomes obvious once you look at current travel times. The 3.7 kilometre stretch between Swami Samarth Nagar at Lokhandwala Circle and the Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Centre on the Western Express Highway can currently take anywhere between 30 and 45 minutes during peak hours, a genuinely frustrating bottleneck for daily commuters.
Part of a Bigger Mumbai Vision
This flyover sits within MMRDA's broader MMRDA Mumbai in Minutes initiative, a citywide push aimed at creating faster, more seamless east-west connectivity across the metropolitan region.
