Why Farmers Forced a Rethink
The original alignment cut straight through Kagal and Hatkanangale talukas in Kolhapur district, and landowners there were not having it. Protests grew loud enough that the state government promised changes well before the alignment was finalised. The redesigned route now steers clear of those two talukas entirely, instead passing through Karvir, Bhudargad, Ajra, and Chandgad before linking up with Sawantwadi in Sindhudurg. It is a rare instance of ground level pushback genuinely reshaping a mega infrastructure blueprint rather than just delaying it.
Satara Joins the Route
One of the more notable additions in the revised plan is Satara district, which was not part of the earlier corridor. Roughly forty kilometres of the expressway will now pass through Gondawale and Shikhar Shinganapur, bringing the total district count along the route to thirteen. For a project this size, adding an entire district mid planning says a lot about how fluid these alignments remain even after years of study.
The Cities and Pilgrimage Sites Along the Way
Starting near Pavnar in Wardha district, the expressway threads through Yavatmal, Hingoli, Nanded, Parbhali, Latur, Beed, Dharashiv, Solapur, Sangli, and Kolhapur before crossing into Sindhudurg and ending at Patradevi on the Goa border. Along the way, it connects some genuinely significant pilgrimage destinations, including the Mahalakshmi temple in Kolhapur and the Tuljabhavani shrine near Tuljapur. That religious connectivity angle is actually where the expressway's name comes from, referencing the Shaktipeeth shrines scattered across this belt.
Cutting Travel Time Dramatically
The headline benefit for ordinary travellers is time. A drive that currently eats up eighteen to twenty hours between Nagpur and Goa should shrink to somewhere around seven to eight hours once this six lane, access controlled greenfield expressway opens. That is a genuinely transformative shift for anyone doing this route regularly, whether for business, pilgrimage, or a straightforward Goa holiday from Vidarbha.
How It Fits Into Maharashtra's Expressway Network
Once operational, this corridor is expected to overtake the 701 kilometre Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg as India's longest high speed access controlled expressway. It will also intersect the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway near its starting point and cross the upcoming Surat-Chennai Expressway around Latur, effectively knitting together several major road networks across central and western India.
Timeline and What Comes Next
MSRDC remains the nodal agency executing the project, and land measurement work has already been completed in a meaningful share of villages along the revised route. Realistic completion estimates point to 2028 or 2029, though projects of this scale in India rarely stick to their first announced deadline without some slippage along the way.
