Introduction
Nagpur's metro story has moved fast since the Orange Line first opened back in 2019, and it isn't slowing down. Nagpur Metro Phase 3 has now been formally outlined, and if it goes ahead as planned, it will end up being the largest single expansion the city's rail network has seen so far.
Four Corridors, One Ambitious Plan
Rather than a single new line, Phase 3 is structured around four separate corridors, each solving a different connectivity gap across the city. Together they're expected to add close to 54.5 kilometres to the existing network, which is a fairly massive jump when you consider Phase I and Phase II combined currently run to about 84 kilometres.
The Priority Corridor: Sitabuldi to Koradi
Of the four, the Sitabuldi to Koradi stretch has been given priority status. Running 11.5 kilometres, this corridor was actually finalised earlier under the Comprehensive Mobility Plan and is meant to strengthen north-south movement through the city core, an axis that has historically relied heavily on congested road corridors.
Reaching Into Industrial Nagpur
A shorter but strategically important corridor connects MIDC ESR to CEAT Limited, spanning roughly 3 kilometres. It's a small stretch on paper, but its real purpose is last mile connectivity into the Butibori MIDC industrial belt, an area with a large working population that currently depends almost entirely on road transport to reach factory floors and warehouses.
Betting on New Nagpur
The most forward looking piece of this plan is arguably the Khapri to New Nagpur corridor, stretching about 15 kilometres. New Nagpur is still a greenfield development in the making, and extending metro connectivity there before the area is even fully built up is an interesting bet on future urban growth rather than existing demand.
What About the Inner Ring Road
The fourth corridor centres around an Inner Ring Road link, rounding out the four-route package that makes up Nagpur Metro Phase 3. Combined, these corridors are expected to push the city's total metro network to somewhere around 129 kilometres, a figure that would place Nagpur among the more extensively connected metro cities in India, not bad for a city its size.
Who's Driving This Decision
This isn't a plan sitting quietly in some government file either. A high level stakeholder meeting on the matter was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis alongside Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, signalling that this expansion has attention at both the state and central level, which typically speeds up approval timelines rather than slowing them down.
What Happens Before Construction Starts
Nothing gets built immediately though. Officials have indicated that an Alternative Analysis Report and a full Detailed Project Report will be prepared over roughly nine months, a process that will settle final alignments, station placements, and crucially, whether specific stretches run elevated or underground. Only after that groundwork is done does the DPR head to state and central governments for formal approval.
The Money Question Remains Open
Cost estimates for the priority corridors under this plan currently sit around ₹8,625 crore, though that figure will almost certainly shift once the complete four corridor package is fully costed and finalised. Large infrastructure projects rarely stick to their earliest number, and metro projects in particular tend to see costs creep upward as detailed engineering work progresses.
A Realistic Timeline
Construction on Phase 3 isn't expected to begin immediately either. It will likely start in stages only after Phase II wraps up, which itself is targeted for completion around December 2027. So while the announcement is exciting, actual dirt moving on Phase 3 corridors is still a few years out.
Summary
Nagpur Metro Phase 3 represents the city's most ambitious rail expansion yet, adding four corridors and nearly 55 kilometres to an already growing network. With the Sitabuldi to Koradi metro corridor prioritised and a fresh link planned toward the upcoming New Nagpur greenfield city, this next stage of MahaMetro network expansion signals serious long term intent, even as detailed planning, costing, and approvals continue to take shape over the coming months.
