Introduction
Anyone who has crawled along Ghodbunder Road at six in the evening knows why Thane wants a metro. After years of delays, the first stretch of
Thane Metro Line 4 now looks close to carrying passengers. The Maharashtra transport minister has said it should open this December. Residents have heard promises before, so the real test is the day the doors open.
What Is Actually Opening
The first phase runs 10.5 kilometres between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction. Thane Metro Line 4 will open in slices, and this is only the first. The full corridor will eventually link Wadala, Ghatkopar, Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh over roughly 35 kilometres. Think of it as the opening chapter, not the whole book. And a chapter that, for now, has no public date attached.
A Long Road to This Point
Earlier targets pointed to December 2025 for a short section and April 2026 for the rest. Both dates passed. Trial runs started, then paused, then resumed. Delays like this are common in Indian infrastructure, yet they hurt buyers who planned a move around the metro. Some who booked flats expecting an early opening are still waiting. Treat any new date as a goal until a ribbon is cut.
Clearances Done and Pending
Some serious hurdles are behind the project. The trains have received safety certification, and a central design body cleared the first phase after a wait of 209 days. Inspectors have also examined the maintenance pit at Gaimukh. What remains is the final safety approval from the metro rail safety commissioner, without which no ticket can be sold. Each step has taken months, which explains why announced dates keep drifting.
Six Trains and a Temporary Home
The first stretch will begin with six train sets. Because the main depot is not finished, the authority is using a pit line at Gaimukh to park and service them for now. A depot is simply the yard where trains are stored and repaired. It is a practical workaround, though fewer trains usually mean longer gaps between services.
Where It Connects
Plans show Gaimukh joining Metro Line 10, while Dongripada is meant to link with the Thane ring metro and Kapurbawdi with Line 5. None of those links will exist on day one. So early riders will mostly use Thane Metro Line 4 as a local shuttle along Ghodbunder Road, with wider connections arriving in stages. Full corridor completion is targeted for 2027.
Relief for Ghodbunder Road
The corridor runs parallel to a road that handles enormous traffic. Even a limited opening could shorten peak hour journeys between Kasarvadavali and Cadbury Junction, according to residents. But a metro does not clear a road overnight. Some drivers will switch, many will not, and the true effect will take months to measure. A train every few minutes would help far more than one every quarter hour.
What It Means for Property
Thane real estate near stations usually draws extra interest once services start. Buyers look at Kasarvadavali, Majiwada and Gaimukh with fresh eyes, and Ghodbunder Road property sellers will certainly quote the metro in their brochures. In my experience much of the gain is priced in before opening day, so latecomers may find less upside than they expect.
How Buyers Should Respond
Walk the route from the home to the nearest station, because a flat that is one kilometre away on a map can be twenty minutes away on foot. Ask for the RERA number, the possession date and the actual distance. Never pay a higher rate only because a developer says Thane Metro Line 4 is nearby. Wait for passenger services before judging the benefit.
Summary
Thane Metro Line 4 is nearing its first public stretch from Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction, with a December opening targeted but not yet confirmed. Safety clearances have moved ahead, though final approval is still pending. Ghodbunder Road commuters and Thane real estate buyers have reason for hope, yet earlier delays suggest caution and patience until services actually begin.
